Trevor Lawrence extension: Jaguars make QB highest-paid player in NFL history with five-year, $275M contract
New Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald wants to make DK Metcalf 'a moving target for defenses.'
Rams' Sean McVay says one rookie in particular 'has really stood out' during offseason program.
Trevor Lawrence Signs Extension!
The Jaguars announced it had reached a five-year deal with its franchise quarterback. According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the deal contains $200 million guaranteed and $142 million fully guaranteed. He's now set to earn about $55 million per season, tying him with Joe Burrow for the most money for a quarterback annually.
The biggest discourse after the contract was whether Lawrence deserved the new deal. Everyone started putting together graphics outlining why many think this is an overpay for an average quarterback. Some of our favorites are below:
In today’s NFL, that’s the price you pay for a quarterback, and this deal is essentially the fair market price for the position. The Jaguars have to hope that Lawrence has a bounce-back season and lives up to the contract. His rocky rookie season was attributed to the failed Urban Meyer experiment. He bounced back with a strong 2022 season that included his first Pro Bowl berth. Lawrence also helped lead the Jaguars to a surprising division title and an upset win over the Chargers in the AFC wild-card round. Last season, the team and Lawrence failed to live up to expectations, though and saw the Jaguars miss the playoffs. Part of the down season could be attributed to the Jaguars’ offensive line play and the injuries he suffered, but make no mistake, Lawrence needs to step up his game to earn this contract.
From a fantasy perspective, he is currently being drafted as QB12 in Superflex leagues. Last season, he was as inconsistent as they come. In the first ten weeks of the season, he was QB19 in fantasy points per game, but from week 11 on, he was QB7 in fantasy points per game. The hope for managers is that he turned a corner in the last half of the season and will be able to continue that success.
The Jaguars retooled their offensive group by drafting Brian Thomas Jr. and signing Gabe Davis to replace Calvin Ridley, who left for the Titans in free agency. Thomas fits Lawrence’s skillset as a legit WR1 who can go up and make a play when needed, especially in the redzone. They also added Devin Duvernay, who could be a sneaky addition to fantasy this season in deep leagues with kick return fantasy points. It’s hard to imagine Lawrence not living up to his ADP, but his consistency will be the biggest concern. This is a make-or-break season for everyone in the Jaguars organization.

Could we be undervaluing DK Metcalf this season?
New offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and new head coach Mike Mcdonald have said they plan to move Metcalf around in the offense this season and pepper him with targets.
"I can tell you this: We want to get DK the ball a lot, too," Macdonald told NFL Media. "It feels different now when 14 is out there. He is a big, imposing, fast, powerful receiver. We're really excited about it. We've talked about it since we got here in February -- plans for him and Tyler [Lockett] and Jaxon [Smith-Njigba] and Noah [Fant] and our backs. And what it would look like and how we can move guys around and make DK a moving target for defenses, where they have to account for him at all times but it's gonna be hard to find him."
That quote should be music to Metcalf's manager’s ears. They should also be excited about new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Last season at Washington, Grubb helped lead the Washington Huskies to the National Championship. He led an offensive unit that ranked No. 12 in the country in total offense (462.1 yards per game), No. 2 in passing offense (343.7 passing yards per game), and averaged 36 points per game. Grubb also helped develop Michael Penix Jr. into a top-10 NFL draft pick. That could be great news for Geno Smith and this entire Seahawks offense.
As far as Metcalf as a fantasy asset, he has been a consistent top-24 producer over the last three seasons. He has finished as WR22, WR24, and WR20, but despite the consistent finishes, he has yet to live up to his ADP in those seasons. He will be competing with Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Noah Fant for targets this season, so he will need to be efficient with the targets he gets. If this coaching staff does want to prioritize him in the offense, though, we could be looking at another strong WR2 finish in fantasy. Metcalf’s ceiling may be limited, but his floor is safe enough to be considered a WR2 by most teams.

Blake Corum getting mini-camp buzz!
The Rams made a significant investment in Blake Corum, drafting him with the No. 83 overall pick in the NFL Draft. So far, head coach Sean McVay has liked what he saw from the former Michigan star.
"On the offensive side, I've been pleased with a lot of guys, but Blake Corum has really stood out," McVay said, via RamsWire. "Mature beyond his years. I love the way that he handles himself. I love even more how when there's been a couple of things that didn't go the way we wanted, how he responded the next play. The mental toughness that you see from him. [Running backs coach] Ron Gould is excellent with that room. Even Kyren, in his own way has done such a great job of imparting a certain amount of wisdom with him."
That type of ringing endorsement from McVay should be music to anyone who has Corum rostered. Kyren Williams has been out this off-season due to a foot injury, and McVay said he will be kept off the field for the entirety of OTAs and the June minicamp. Williams is expected to be back in time for training camp in July, but until the Corum has been given much-needed reps, including some 1st team reps. That type of experience will be necessary as the season progresses in 2024. Corum is an asset to keep your eye on this off-season and, based on his current market value, could be an intriguing buy.

Is Nico Iamaleava making a leap in 2026? 🚀
CBS Sports has ranked Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava as their #1 potential breakout quarterback in 2024, and for good reason. With Joe Milton heading to the NFL and the Volunteers not targeting anyone in the transfer portal, it would seem that head coach Josh Heupel is ready to hand the keys to Iamaleava this season.
We last saw him win the Citrus Bowl over a young Iowa defense 35-0. He was 12-for-19 passing for 151 yards and a touchdown and rushed 15 times for 27 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on his way to an MVP performance. He was built for this Tennessee offense and could be one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC next season.
He‘s a true dual-threat quarterback, even at his size, and has enough athleticism to make defenses pay with his legs. His arm is his real strength, though. He can sling it all over the field; this offense will allow him to showcase those abilities. He will need to work on his timing and his tendency to hold onto the football, but he has one of the highest ceilings of any quarterback in the class. There is a chance that Iamaleava will establish himself as one of the best quarterbacks in all of college football this season. He is a quarterback worth drafting in devy.
